Leila Nadir and Cary Peppermint lecture

Last Monday, I could not attend the workshop “OS Fermentation”; however, I went to the lecture in the evening. I was a little late for the talk, and Leila Nadir and Cary Peppermint showed us a short video “Ecologies of inconvenient.” The video is a combination of short views from highway rest-stops, urban quick-marts, fast food restaurants along side with individuals fermenting food or digging out springs in the forest. The whole idea is to demonstrate different aspects of twenty-one century lives: sustainability, practicality, reproductive labor, creativity, and economics. Moreover, Nadir and Peppermint also had a speech about “OS Fermentation.” My family has been making a lot of fermentation foods from many kinds of vegetable, but I have never thought of fermentation as a way to express art. I am impressed by how Nadir relates fermentation into industrial food processing such as preservation and health. In one interview, Nadir and Peppermint said that they did not actually seek for an answer, but would prefer to gain public acknowledge and participation about issues.

Another project of Leila Nadir and Cary Peppermint is “Indeterminate Hikes”. The app imports some areas that can be accessible through Google map and includes some suggestions for “hikers” to explore the nature around them. The video “Indeterminate Hike” filmed a group of people exploring the locales and following some instructions such as placing hands on the ground. Hikers also took pictures and left comments and feelings about places they had been to. The purpose is to have people slowing down their lives and spare some time to aspire the beauty of locales that are as worthy of the attention as waterfalls or canyons.
